Ed Makin
CEO & Portfolio Manager
Ed has over 35 years' experience of investing in international equity markets and was a founding partner of Highclere in 2006. Ed is Portfolio Manager of our International Smaller Companies and International SMID Funds and is focused on consistent implementation of the philosophy and process across Highclere's investment strategies. His previous experience was built at Hambros Bank and Morgan Stanley in London, then at Wellington Management in Boston, where he set up and managed International Small and Mid Cap programs there from 1998 to 2005. In his spare time Ed enjoys woodworking and wildlife photography. Ed speaks Spanish and has strong family ties to Chile and Argentina.
Richard Gordon, CFA
Portfolio Manager | Co-Director of Research
Richard has 20 years of equity research and portfolio management experience. He joined Highclere in 2008 from Bear Stearns where he was a VP in European equity research to cover consumer sectors and, in 2013, added portfolio management responsibilities for our International SMID Fund. In 2018, Richard also took on the role of overseeing all aspects of our research process as Director of Research. Prior to joining Highclere, Richard gained experience in Financial Services at KPMG where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant in South Africa. Richard holds a BCom (Hons) degree from the University of Cape Town.
Elliott Chambers
Portfolio Manager | Co-Director of Research
Elliott has 12 years of equity research experience. He first joined Highclere in 2018 from Ruffer Asset Management, where he was a Japan research analyst specializing in technology, media & telecom stocks, and left in March 2022 to pursue a role at Balyasny Asset Management as a Japan specialist. Elliott re-joined Highclere in September 2023 to resume his fundamental research role. Elliott graduated from Cambridge University with a BA (Hons) degree in Geography and speaks conversational Japanese.
William Balfour
Portfolio Manager
William has 13 years of equity research experience. He became a Portfolio Manager of the International Smaller Companies Fund in 2024 following 6 years as Assistant Portfolio Manager from 2018. He joined Highclere in 2014 from Neptune Investment Management, where he was a Global Technology Analyst and Assistant Fund Manager. Prior to joining Highclere, William also worked at Cairneagle Associates, a boutique Strategy Consulting firm. He graduated from Cambridge University with a Masters in Aerospace & Aerothermal Engineering (first class).
Will Sumner, CFA
Investment Analyst
Will has 15 years of equity research experience and joined Highclere in September 2016. Previously, Will worked for Fidelity International in London, covering European health care stocks. Prior to this he was at T. Rowe Price International in London as a Fund Manager's Assistant and Equity Research Associate. Will holds a BA (Hons) degree in Economics from Durham University.
Jan Klincker
Investment Analyst
Jan has 13 years of equity research experience. He joined Highclere in 2016 from Fidelity International where he covered the construction and transport infrastructure sectors. Jan holds a first class (Hons) degree in Accounting & Finance from the University of Manchester and is fluent in French, German and Luxembourgish.
Will Brown
Investment Analyst
Will has 8 years of equity research experience and joined Highclere in March 2023. Previously, Will spent a year at Velanne Asset Management working on the global equity team. Prior to this, he spent five years at Orbis Investment Management as a European generalist. Will holds a BA (Hons) in Chinese from Cambridge University and an MSc in Management from UCL. Will speaks Mandarin and conversational Japanese.
Harry Streeter
Chief Technology Officer – Investment Data Analysis & AI
Harry has 11 years of experience in portfolio analytics. He joined Highclere in November 2016. Previously, Harry worked in the Private Wealth arm of James Hambro & Partners. He holds a BA in Economics & Philosophy from the University of Leeds.
Emmeline Kavanagh
Portfolio Analyst – Investment Data Analysis
Emmy has 19 years of trading and analytical experience and joined Highclere in 2006. Previously, Emmeline worked at Colchester Global Investors Limited, Silchester International Investors Limited and HSBC, gaining back-office and trade administration experience. She graduated from the University of Sussex with a BSc (Hons) degree in Chemistry. Emmy speaks fluent French.
Susan Steele
Director of Marketing & Client Service
Susan has 34 years of international equity experience and is a founding partner of Highclere. She spent 10 years with UBS in New York in a European equity sales role, where she was primarily responsible for advising institutional clients on European equities. Prior to this, Susan spent three years at Credit Suisse First Boston in London and New York and two years with ICC in Hong Kong. Susan has a BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.
Alanna Solomon, CAIA
Head of US Marketing & Client Service
Alanna has 17 years of investment experience and joined Highclere in September 2022. Previously, Alanna was at MSD Capital (the private investment firm for Michael Dell and his family) in New York for fifteen years, where she was a Principal, engaged in external manager selection and the management of the investment portfolio of the Dell Foundation. Alanna held supporting roles, including Investor Relations and Marketing. Alanna is a Certified Alternative Investment Analyst and received a B.Sc. in Business Administration from The University of New Hampshire Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics.
David Gray
Head of Client Service & Investment Administration
David has 19 years of operations and client service experience and joined Highclere in 2013. Previously he worked at Coutts, firstly on the Asia/Africa private banking desk, and then within their discretionary investment mandate team. David graduated from the University of Glasgow with an LLB (Hons) degree in Law in 2003.
